Prayer flags stretch across Base Camp on Mount Everest, with Nuptse Mountain looming in the distance. Every year, climbers from around the globe start out here in an attempt to climb Everest, the highest mountain above sea level in the world.
Sherpa Nima Dorje Tamang traverses a ladder on the Khumbu Icefall of Mount Everest in Nepal. "Universally terrifying, it is the most dangerous part of the southern route on Everest. The constantly shifting Khumbu Icefall is like a bunch of ice cubes continually tumbling down the icy mountain wall," said photographer Bobby Model.
Lava from Mt Kilaeau flowed down the slopes via lava tubes into the ocean and the resulting violent explosions generated such large steam columns as to pull up waterspouts from the sea. This spectacular display continued into the night and also called down lightning from the sky.
This is the result of a ten-second exposure on a breezy evening from a suspension bridge in Upper Michigan’s Porcupine Mountains. Thankfully, no one was around the bridge to induce camera shake. At the end of it all, it was very, very satisfying and yes, ten seconds—often a minuscule amount of time in our daily standards—did feel like eternity.
